In a Facebook post upon it’s release, Liberator’s Andrew Steck says this: “Holy blazes, it finally happened!!! The Liberator album that was recorded in 2016-2018 in a public elementary school, a warehouse loading dock (that may or may not have been used with permission), and other smaller rooms around Athens is now available to stream on any of your streaming sites of choice.
What took it so long? Well, that would be as sordid a tale as the creation of the album itself. Short version: drummer moved away and grew his lovely family while remaining members focused on other projects. I don’t mean to imply anything when I say we never really broke up. Or do I?
For my part, this album represents a full tilt indulgence in applying compositional concepts and arrangement that I’d later use on an orchestral scale on solo releases. There are SO MANY guitar parts on this album. “Tropicalia Gal” (my tribute to Gal Costa) and “Disco Valentino” contain guitar work that’s among my best on record, imo. I also have my first vocal appearance on a Liberator album here on the track “Even Odd Spaces,” but I sort of sound like an alien.
I think the album overall maintains a vibe that I might summarize as prog-punk, but there are loads of other influences and styles represented including, but not limited to Tropicália, disco, psychedelia, North African tonality, big band, etc.”
